Jubilee 2007: This Will Cure Your Cynicism

Over 2,100 students gathered during the weekend of February 16-18 for Jubilee 2007! Between seminars, worship sessions and concerts, students caught a vision for how they might offer their entire lives up to serve God.

It was packed weekend, during which students were challenged to live out the Gospel message—to care for the poor, to stand against injustice, to use their particular passions to make a difference in the world around them, close to home and around the globe.

Keynote speakers included Shane Claiborne (author of The Irresistible Revolution), Steve Garber (author of Fabric of Faithfulness and mentor to many Christian professionals), Gary Haugen (formerly of the U.S. State Department, and now head of the International Justice Mission, whose goal is to free the 27 million slaves around the world), and Barbara Williams-Skinner (President of the Skinner Leadership Institute). All four main session speakers, along with the many who led breakout seminars on topics as diverse as medicine, law and pornography, called these students to excellence and to obedience—and many responded enthusiastically to that call.

According to Gideon Strauss, editor of Comment, the Work Research Foundation’s monthly worldview journal, “The best student conference of which I am aware is the annual Jubilee conference organized by the Coalition for Christian Outreach (CCO) in Pittsburgh…. Events like Jubilee are of great importance, I believe, because they challenge and encourage us in extra-ordinary ways as we seek to grow our ordinary lives and work out of the love of God.”

As Bob Robinson, who serves the CCO as an Area Director, observes: “This [Jubilee] is different from the Christianity about which I’ve become cynical. It is not just a bunch of us Christians getting together for a Bible study so that we can know more about God while cursing the darkness ‘out there’ and awaiting the return of Christ to make things right. It is moving into the darkness, being a transformative light in that darkness through the grace and power of Jesus Christ.”
