This question was posed in a recent Google ad, directing readers to a quiz to help them figure out the answer. It’s a sign of our times and our American culture, suggesting that we can walk through a supermarket of possibilities and choose, much as we do a favorite brand of toothpaste or cereal.
A recent article in the Boston Globe highlights a study by the Pew Charitable Trust, and points out that “America has long been regarded as the most religious of Western nations. Six in 10 of us say that religion plays a very important role in our lives.” And yet a quarter of 18- to 29-year-olds claims no religious affiliation at all, and 44% of Americans say that they are not practicing the religion they were raised in. They have either embraced a new religion or opted for none at all.
