CCO Staff Worker, Paul Harbison, receives WEA Instructor of the Year award
Pittsburgh, PA (March 3, 2009)— Paul Harbison, director of the Outdoor Leadership Team (OLT) for the CCO (Coalition for Christian Outreach) received the Instructor of the Year award from the Wilderness Education Association (WEA) at the 2009 National Conference on Outdoor Leadership in Bloomington, IN.
Paul’s colleague, Jack Drury, who is a former WEA board member, author, and VP of Leading EDGE presented the award.
“Paul Harbison has proven himself at every level with the WEA,” said Jack. “Paul is responsible for integrating outdoor adventure into the context of college ministry. Tonight [Paul] is attending his son’s basketball game. I commend him for that, and that fact is indicative of why he is receiving tonight’s award.
“In President Obama’s inaugural address, he said among other things that, ‘Our challenges may be new, the instruments with which we meet them may be new, but those values upon which our success depends, honesty and hard work, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism—these things are old.’
“I thought about those values and how important they are to our teaching. I realize that all good wilderness instructors aspire to those virtues. There are few, if any, WEA instructors that represent those values better than Paul Harbison.”
The WEA is a national outdoor education organization that offers training and certification to instructors at colleges, universities and organizations across the United States. Wilderness education is becoming more prominently used for leadership development in various forms such as one-day rocking climbing trips or six-week-long backpacking expeditions.
The CCO is a campus ministry organization which partners with churches, colleges and organizations to develop men and women who live out their Christian faith in every area of life.
