“Thanks so much for a Christ-centered program focusing on how the Gospel of Jesus Christ compels us to be culture-makers and changers.”
During the weekend of February 19-21, college students gathered at Pittsburgh’s Westin Convention Center to catch a vision for how they might make a difference—on their campuses today, and in the world tomorrow. On Friday evening, Geneva College professor Don Opitz kicked off Jubilee 2010 by inviting the crowd of 2,000 to enter into the “three-mile-per-hour Jubilee stroll,” soaking in what God has to say about how we apply the Gospel message to all of life.
On Sunday morning, Christian community development pioneer John Perkins closed the conference by exhorting this “post-racist generation” of students to bring change to the broken structures of our society.
And during the hours in between, students were given example upon illustration upon invitation to do something meaningful with their lives, to bring hope to people and places who need it, and to use their college education and future professions to further the Kingdom of God. Men and women who are living out their faith as architects, physicians, therapists, artists, writers, actors, teachers and nonprofit founders led seminars to paint students a picture of what that might look like.
On Saturday morning, actress, comedienne and author Susan Isaacs shared how God “ruined” her life—“and it’s the best thing that ever happened to me.” As founder and Chief Executive Officer of Restore International, Bob Goff, phrased it during his Saturday evening talk, we all need to put our faith into action: “When you love, you do.”
Here is what a few participants are saying about their own experience of Jubilee 2010:
“I was able to find my faith again, and have a reconnection with God.”
“Jubilee 2010 changed my perspective as to how to provide patient-centered healthcare. I am in pharmacy school and was really starting to doubt my purpose there recently. Jubilee brought faith into the medical sciences for me, which I would never have experienced in my professional schooling curriculum.”
“Jubilee was the best weekend of my life! I can’t wait until next year!”
