CCO partner, Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU) is one of three schools in the country being honored with a Presidential Award for Excellence in General Community Service. This is the highest federal recognition a college and university can receive for its commitment to service-learning and fostering civic engagement.
The Office of Community Service Learning, which initiates many of the community projects, is run out of the Chaplain’s office where CCO staff workers William Hayes and Lisa Ho serve as assistant chaplains. The Chaplain’s office works with the majority of all the students who participate in service events.
“I offer my personal congratulations to the Ohio Wesleyan students, faculty, and staff who gave so selflessly of their time and talent last year to improve the lives of others,” wrote President of OWU Rock Jones in a congratulatory e-mail to the campus community. “I especially would like to recognize Sue Pasters and the Office of Community Service Learning for spearheading so much of this good work.”
Over the course of the 2008-2009 school year, OWU students mentored at-risk youth, served in soup kitchens, launched environmental projects and hosted workshops, circulated petitions and marched in support of several causes. Nearly 1,800 OWU students completed more than 45,000 hours of public service this past academic year. Click here to read the complete description of OWU’s service work.
The CCO is a campus ministry organization which partners with churches, colleges and organizations to develop men and women who live out their Christian faith in every area of life. The CCO’s core purpose is “transforming college students to transform the world.”
