“I recently found the journal I used to take notes in during Jubilee conferences,” says Carrie Anderton, who attended Jubilee three of her four years of college. “It is truly amazing how things I heard and wrote down then have been applied in my life over the past seven years. I was reading back through and thinking, ‘Wow, I didn’t even realize what an impact this would have on my life or how true it would be until now that I am taking the time to look back on it.’”
Carrie first connected to the CCO’s ministry at Wheeling Jesuit University during her sophomore year. “I was definitely interested in finding Christian fellowship in college, but there were no CCO staff on campus my freshman year. As soon as they came onto the scene, I got involved!”
She started participating in a women’s Bible study with CCO staff members Sarah Beres and Katie Tarara, who also became good friends. “They were amazing,” she says. “They were available for coffee and advice anytime!”
Today, Carrie teaches first-graders in Greensboro, North Carolina, where she is an active member of Christian City Church Greensboro. “I write the curriculum for the two- to eight-year-olds at my church and am on the leadership team for the children’s ministry. I am also currently taking a very intense six-month online discipleship course with a group of eight other people at my church. I am very open about my faith with coworkers and friends, and I love to invite others to my church.”
Carrie credits the influence of the CCO with helping her to view her work as a teacher as a true vocation. “I don’t believe I would be teaching in a low-income ‘tough’ school if I hadn’t prayed through the process and realized that it truly is a calling,” she says. “I think I am more aware of the needs of those around me because of the things I learned at conferences and through Bible study and fellowship with the CCO staff.
“The CCO staff and the wisdom I gained by being a part of the CCO’s ministry really helped me to mature in Christ. I feel like I didn’t really know what it meant to truly live my faith until college. I was surrounded by Christians, and it was great to have others on campus to help prepare me for my time there and beyond. I love how there was a focus on bringing your faith into all areas of your life.”
