There are several CCO ministries at Kent State University.

Ministry to Athletes
Ted Schumacher first started doing campus ministry with the CCO in 1972 at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He has been at Kent State since 1986. Many students have been thankful to God for Ted’s ministry to them over the years, including his new co-worker, Avery Danage.

At Kent State, Ted and Avery advise the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), which now meets together with Our Divine Unity, a primarily African-American outreach. Their combined meeting is on Mondays, 7:30 PM in room 204 of the KSU Student Center above the Kiva. This FCA/ODU combined ministry creates a unique opportunity for outreach and discipleship to not just athletes, but to all students on campus. As the FCA facilitator, Ted has become the unofficial chaplain for Kent State’s football team, connecting with players on the sidelines and inviting them to dinners at his home.

Ted and Avery also oversee the Tuesday Night Get Down, a fellowship where young men congregate to hear topics ranging from spiritual maturity to how to study the Bible. Avery also meets with students individually to mentor them.

Ted meets one-on-one with many students throughout the week, helping them come to a deeper understanding of God through Christ. Ted is also a member of The Presbyterian Church of Kent, where he works with the college students who attend there.

Through this multi-faceted ministry, Ted reaches a diverse student population: men, women, athletes, non-athletes, and students of many different ethnicities.

Late Night Ministries
“What’s significant about my existence?” “Why are things so messed up in the world and in me?” “Where is there any hope for the world or for me?” Late Night Christian Fellowship approaches these questions and others with the understanding that God is deeply involved in and concerned about every area of our lives—our studies, our celebration of the arts, our sexuality, our responsibility as affluent Americans, our varied relationships, our roles in the larger global community and the local church. God’s involvement gives meaning to issues of environmental stewardship, socio-economic justice, racial reconciliation, and more.

Late Night gathers on Thursday nights at 8:47 PM in the Multicultural Diversity Center, room 206 of the KSU Student Center, just above the KIVA. These gatherings are shaped by stories and experiences. Because we know people learn in many different ways, we’ve integrated into our weekly gatherings small-group discussions, poetry-writing, silence and reflection, making art, and film discussion as ways to widen the palette for a variety of learning styles, always rooted in the Truth of scripture. We want to invite a conversation to develop among the community, something that is organic and growing. This gathering serves as a spring board into Bible studies, one-on-one and group discipleship, student leadership programs, weekend social events, and retreats. Kairos House is an excellent avenue for academic discipleship, where students live together in an intentional, Christian community living experience.

The CCO campus workers for Late Night Ministries include Kris Herman and Bob Robinson, along with associate staff member Sue Grogan-Johnson.
