The goal of our ministry at Penn State Abington is to develop a servant leadership team of students who are dedicated to serving and living out God’s Kingdom on their campus while they grow and learn of the implications of serving Christ in all areas of life. The servant leadership group helps to guide and mentor a dinner and discipleship group (Abington Christian Fellowship) that meets weekly. This group focuses each fall on incoming freshman and their needs as they enter the college arena, continuing through the year to prepare the participants to be Christ’s advocates at Penn State Abington (through class participation and involvement in other campus groups), in spheres of work (most PSA students work part- or full-time), and at home (many of the participants are the only Christians in their family).
In 2006, the Abington Christian Fellowship sponsored the first-ever Penn State Abington Alternative Spring Break Trip. Five students and two adults drove down to Gulf Port, Mississippi to help with Katrina Relief efforts. All who participated in the trip grew as they experienced God’s story in the lives of victims encountered, hospitality of Christian hosts, and the opportunity to be used by God to serve others in great need. Plans for another Alternative Spring Break Trip are in the works, as well as efforts to make the trip an annual opportunity.
