Luggage
During the day, you will carry a small daypack for your lunch, water bottles, and rain gear. A large duffle or suitcase should contain your belongings and will meet you each night at our lodging.
Lodging and Accommodations
We will stay most nights in local inns and hotels in the towns we pass along the way. Most of these are three-star hotels. While they are small, they are clean and offer a sense of locale. We will discover the variety of fares in the local restaurants or hotel dining rooms when we stay in towns. For one night, we will stay at a mountain hut or inns on the trail. These hiker’s lodges are rustic and provide bunk accommodations and hearty family style meals.
Meeting Point
We will meet at the Geneva Airport on June 9th (actual time depends on participants’ travel plans but plan on earliest arrivals to maximize). You will be transported by van to Chamonix for our trip introduction and first Savoyard dinner together. Please let us know if you plan on making alternative transportation plans. Although Geneva is the nearest airport, trains from Paris and other destinations to Chamonix are available.
Qualifications
The trip is considered moderate to strenuous hiking. While you will only be carrying a small daypack, the elevation gain and loss every day is quite impressive. You will need to be in good physical condition prior to this trip. We strongly recommend beginning a workout program 3-4 months prior to the trip. This should include cardio training. The better in shape you are for the trip, the more enjoyable it will be for you.
Weather
While it is summer, we will be high up in the mountains at times. The weather can be unpredictable in late June. Temperature can range from high 50?s to the high 70?s during the day. Evenings can drop into the low 40?s. Rain and wind are to be expected and even sometimes a bit of snow.
