On a glorious western Pennsylvania fall day, the CCO and the Women of Pittsburgh 2000 joined together to host the 2007 Walk for Racial Harmony at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium. Walkers, entertainment groups, vendors, the mayor, and the news media all gathered to celebrate harmony as a way of life.
Every step of the way was enhanced by the crisp, cool morning — beginning with opening remarks by Michelle Wright of WTAE and Lynne Hayes-Freeland of KDKA, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, the CCO’s President, Dan Dupee, Gladys Hunt-Mason of WP2, and Lucy Scandrett on harp, whose music resonated in the first tunnel. All along the walk, people were talking, exchanging “Walk bracelets,” and listening to music, courtesy of the Center of Life, the Joyful Noise Choir, the Mt. Zion Baptist Choir, the Oakland Girls’ Chamber Choir, and Some of God’s Children Choir. The animals even seemed to be in good spirits, with the polar bears more than ready to entertain. And, how do the penguins leap, glide, jump, swim and cavort like that?
The camaraderie on October 13, 2007 gives hope and joy to a way of living that celebrates humankind’s differences and similarities. Even Eat’n Park’s cookies had smiles on them! The Pirate Pierogie even put in an appearance to round out some of the best of the ’Burgh. Add this to the 600 walkers who came out early, and you have a perfect way to share one of God’s special days.
