- Promotes the holistic development of each student in the residence hall; indirectly influences growth by coordinating the activity of residence assistants; invests the majority of time in developing and directly influencing the residence assistants.
- Facilitates the development of residence assistants; provides them with resource, counsel, and guidance; allows them to make decisions and creatively do their jobs while ensuring that institutional standards are maintained; actively manages the residence assistants, energizes and focuses them on their duties.
- Gathers information about the health and well being of students through informal observations, empathetic listening, and regular meetings with residence assistants; monitors the physical structure of the residence hall; keeps track of and reports any damage; completes administrative paperwork in a timely and accurate fashion.
- Designs and plans a whole program for residence life, but delegates the work of specific project planning and implementation to the residence assistants; Strategically casts the overall vision, but delegates the specifics; has responsibility ensuring that all programming fits within a budget.
- Assesses the behavior of the whole residence hall culture and formulates policy to modify it when necessary; models the basic values of Christian living.
- Looks for opportunities to teach and minister to students.
- Remains poised to deal with a variety of unexpected problems and crises of students. Utilizes the procedures and protocols of the institution in addressing such challenges, but applies them according to the specific needs of the students.
- Strategically seeks out and builds relationships with certain students who hold potential to carry out leadership functions and ministry in the residence hall; recruits & trains students to take on RA positions and other administrative functions in the hall (e.g. desk clerks).
- Participates with other members of the institution in disciplining students; mediates conflicts among students, and between students and their residence assistants.
- Operates in the midst of people almost constantly during the day and is willing to generously share his/her time; relates to a wide variety of people; remains flexible within a structure of schedules; wears a number of different hats (crisis manager, counselor, confidante, disciplinarian, institutional representative, trainer)
