- What kinds of positions do you have?
- The CCO has a wide variety of positions. Some are with local churches working as their college minister. Others are with colleges and universities themselves such as residence hall directors, service learning directors, or Chaplain’s assistants. Lastly, we have community positions which is often when a local board chooses to support a campus minister on a campus. Regardless of the position, each has ministry to college students as its primary objective.
- With what denominations do you work?
- We are an interdenominational ministry working with many denominations and are always open to working with more. In the past, our staff have worked in positions in the following denominations: Presbyterian, Methodist, Catholic, Church of the Covenant, Church of the Brethren, Lutheran, Episcopalian, and Church of God.
- Who do I work for while on CCO staff?
- You work for the CCO at the cooperating institution. Your job description will be a combination of the two, but you should view yourself as full-time staff with the CCO and the cooperating institution. A business world example could be that of a consultant. Consultants serve clients full-time but are part of an outside company that provides training and support.
- Why work with the CCO — why not just get a position at a church or college?
- There are many reasons why, but perhaps one of the most important is that the CCO has an extensive training program that provides you with tools to excel professionally in campus ministry. Our new staff training program takes place the summer before you start on campus and you will meet in regional “training teams” throughout your first year on staff. In addition, all CCO staff gather together four times a year, at three two-day Staff Seminars and for a week in July for Summer Institute. Moreover, our leadership can help you find a position that best fits your gifts and skills.
- By whom and how exactly do I get paid?
- Your paycheck will come monthly from the CCO, with all necessary taxes deducted. All the money you receive from your supporters and the money from the cooperating institution come together into your Ministry Account. From this account, you are paid a monthly salary and any ministry expenses you claim, with a monthly amount deducted for training fees.
- What salary can I expect when working for the CCO?
- We offer a competitive salary and a salary range based on level of education and ministry experience. We also provide full medical benefits, vision, dental, and a modest life insurance policy.
- Do you provide training to raise support?
- YES! We have a team of staff whose exclusive responsibility is to train staff and assist them in support-raising. In addition, you will be able to draw on the experiential wisdom of your colleagues, as everyone in the CCOÂ raises money towards their salary.
- What if I have college loans?
- Again, our salaries are comparable to what you would receive in the job market. Many of our staff have college loans, which they are able to pay off as long as they are diligent in raising their full support.
- What are the requirements to apply? How do I apply?
- A college degree is usually required, except in cases where there is significant life and ministry experience. You can obtain an application and reference forms here , or call the CCO at 412.363.3303 and have one mailed to you. Complete and submit the application, along with a resume and three references.
- Can I come for a visit?
- Absolutely! We would love for you to join us at one of our Staff Seminars. All of our staff gather three times a year (in October, January, and April) for training and fellowship. You can join us to gain an insider’s perspective on the CCO, take part in the training we offer, and talk with our staff. We cover all of your food and lodging costs. Please contact us if you are interested in joining us for one of these events.
